Upper Egypt activists fight for constitutional rights

Members of "No to the Marginalization of Upper Egypt" campaign met with the 50-member constitutional committee on Wednesday to discuss the longstanding institutional neglect of the Upper Egyptian governorates.

In a press release, the group said it presented a plan for potential constitutional articles that would restore social and economic rights to the region, helping it to secure a larger share of governmental resources and developmental plans.

The group also demanded the reinstatement of the National Council for Upper Egypt Affairs, which would regularly study its needs and present recommendations for development to the Cabinet. The council should include 50 representatives from Upper Egypt, the group said.

An authority should also be established to monitor how government resources are allocated in the state budget, in order to guarantee a fair distribution of wealth and resources across the country, the statement asserted.

This authority would also assure fairness and transparency in all allocation of governmental resources.
