Turkish ambassador to return to Cairo
The Turkish ambassador to Egypt is expected to return to Cairo today after he was recalled by the Turkish government in protest at the violent dispersal of the Rabea al-Adaweya and Nahda Square sit-ins on August 14.
When Turkish Prime Minister Racep Tayyib Erdogan recalled ambassador to Egypt on August 16 Egypt responded by recalling its ambassador to Turkey the following day.
Turkish-Egyptian relations had been strained since the removal of former President Mohamed Morsi in early July. Turkey described events as a military coup. Erdogan has been outspoken in his criticism of Morsi’s removal and the violent dispersal of the sit-ins calling for his reinstatement, on one occasion refusing to take an official telephone call from the Egyptian government because he does not consider it democratically elected.
Foreign Office spokesperson Badr Abdel Aaty meanwhile said that the Egyptian ambassador to Turkey will only return to Ankara, “when Turkey stops interfering in Egyptian affairs.”
Al-Ahram quotes Abdel Aaty as saying, “Hostile statements and positions and interference in Egyptian affairs must stop…when it does we'll reexamine the matter.”
