Security arrest suspects of attack on Tamarod leader

The state-run Middle East News Agency reported on Tuesday that security forces are working on identifying the perpetrators of an attack on a leading member of the Tamarod movement on Monday night.

Mahmoud Badr, co-founder of the Tamarod movement which collected millions of signatures to demand the resignation of former President Mohamed Morsi, was attacked in Qalyubiya at gunpoint on Monday evening and his car stolen.

A security source told MENA that the incident is being treated as criminal in nature rather than political, adding that 15 suspects in the area have been arrested, most of whom have a criminal record of theft. The source denied media accounts that the events of Monday evening constitute an assassination attempt.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Abdel Aziz, another co-founder of the movement, said that the incident may be criminal or political in nature, the state-run Egynews portal reported. He said that the theft of papers pertaining to the 50-member committee tasked with amending the constitution, of which both he and Badr are members, suggests that the case is political.
