Court rejects Tamarod’s appeal to form political party
The Supreme Administrative Court rejected Tamarod’s appeal to form a political party on Wednesday, meaning the group won’t be able to run on a list in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The court did accept former Armed Forces Chief of Staff Sami Anan’s appeal, giving the green light for the formation of his Masr al-Orouba Party.
The Political Parties Affairs Committee had initially rejected Tamarod and Anan’s applications on December 4, 2014.
Tamarod leaders maintained their papers were rejected in December due to their proposed structure, which suggested removing the party president and designating power to the party’s secretary general, contrary to common practice.
The Tamarod movement was formed in the months leading up to the June 30 protests that led to former President Mohamed Morsi’s ouster. The group initiated and collected signatures for a petition that demanded early presidential elections, and has been credited with spurring the street movement that led to Morsi’s downfall.
The movement has largely supported the current government since last summer, with two Tamarod representatives, Mahmoud Badr and Mohamed Abdel Aziz, sitting on the committee that drafted the current Constitution.
