Tamarod: End of old campaign, beginning of new one with demands for Sisi

Tamarod’s “Correcting the Pathway” campaign announced the end of their designated role at a press conference held on Tuesday at their headquarters in Cairo and announced a new project to put demands to the president during his first 100 days in office, privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported.

Moheb Doss, member of the campaign’s central committee and one of its co-founders, said that they have completed their goal of overthrowing former president Mohamed Morsi and proceeding with presidential elections, which Abdel Fattah al-Sisi recently won.

A statement read at the conference said that they refute the practices of some people utilizing the momentum of the campaign to reduce the revolution to individuals who only represent themselves.

Doss, who said that the campaign was established by members of April 6 and Kefaya movements, as well as a number of Nasserist parties, said, “After July 3, some members of the campaign strayed away from the pathway, announcing their participation in the parliamentary elections and supporting certain candidates," according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.  

Islam Hamam, a member of the campaign’s central committee, said that the campaign rejected seven members, including Mahmoud Badr and Hassan Shahin, due to “their attempts to transform the campaign into a movement without obtaining permission from members of the central committee, as well as announcing that they were running for the parliamentary elections and supporting presidential candidates.”

The campaign also announced the establishment of a new project named “The Masses,” which includes seven demands they have for Sisi during the first 100 days of his rule. Doss added that another press conference would be held to discuss the details of the demands, adding that they will not protest against Sisi if he accomplishes them.   

Maha Abu Bakr, spokesperson of the movement, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the conference was held by members who had distanced themselves from the campaign since July 3, adding, “They don’t have the right to speak on its behalf,” and that their decisions will “not be taken into consideration,” as “they are their own personal views,” Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

“The general assembly and executive office are the only ones who hold the right to make the decision to convert a revolutionary movement into a political party, in line with the progression from ‘Egypt the revolution’ into ‘Egypt the state’ to rebuild institutions,” she added.
