Recent talks over Ethiopian dam fail

Recent talks between Egyptian, Sudanese and Ethiopian ministers of water and irrigation in Khartoum concerning the Renaissance Dam failed to make progress, reported privately owned daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The talks were intended to solve lingering issues between Cairo and Addis Ababa concerning technical and environmental consequences of building the dam.

According to a statement by the irrigation ministry, talks between the three countries failed to reach “mutual agreement.”  The statement added that the Ethiopian minister refused the intervention and supervision of an international team of specialists, a solution previously offered by the Egyptian delegation to assess the consequences for each country and find ways of mitigating against the effects.

Another point of disagreement is related to a paper that guarantees no damages or side effects will occur on the Egyptian side if the dam is built. Ethiopia refused to discuss this paper, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Egypt announced intended cooperation with Ethiopia on the Renaissance Dam project in November.

Experts have speculated as to the effects of the Renaissance Dam, with some claiming it would decrease the power output from the Aswan dam and limit Nile water resources, the main source of which is the Ethiopian plateau.

Negotiations continue in search of alternative solutions, despite the end of the two-day meeting in Khartoum.
