Egypt plans to develop environmentally friendly tourism.

On Monday, the ministries of tourism, electricity and energy and the environment signed an agreement to encourage touristic projects to use renewable energy.

According to state-run Al-Ahram newspaper, the ministries are attempting to lessen greenhouse gas emissions from electricity consumption in the tourism industry.

The agreement, which has international support, specifically from Europe, obligates the ministries to implement a package of policies that facilitate the use of green energy in touristic initiatives.

Resorts and projects that sign up to these development plans will be certified as carbon neutral, “to promote a better image of Egypt’s tourism and environment,” Al-Ahram reported, adding that they can also opt into the electricity ministry’s wind energy projects.

The initiative will be promoted in a bid to boost tourism numbers, which have dropped significantly in the past three years.

Tourism is one of Egypt’s three main revenue earners, and has long been a robust sector for job creation and a source of foreign currency much needed by the government.
