Crude Oil washes onto the beach at Ras Gharib
Patches of crude oil have contaminated around 500 meters of the Red Sea Ras Gharib coastline, a local environment group reported.
Members of the Ras Gharib Environment Protection Association spotted the spill on Friday night, the group’s CEO Khaled Mostafa told Mada Masr.
The group contacted the Ministry of Environment, who set up a committee to investigate the spill. The committee has taken samples of the oil to try to identify the entity responsible and take legal action, according to an Environment Ministry press release Sunday.
The oil on the beach has now been cleaned up, Mostafa said.
The area is Egypt’s leading center for petroleum production. Multinational companies and local joint ventures have wells in the area, and Egypt’s General Petroleum Corporation operates a storage facility there.
“The spill is the direct result of negligence by the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation,” claimed Mostafa.
