For years, private construction in Egypt has gone largely unchecked by government authorities, resulting in close to 3 million building violations, according to the Ministry of Local Development. Now, the government has banned private construction and called for violators to reconcile by paying fines. Will this be enough to ensure — as President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi asserts — that this scenario never happens again?
