Former Prime Minister Atef Ebeid dies at 82
Mubarak-era Prime Minister Atef Ebeid passed away Friday at the age of 82, state-owned news agency MENA reported.
Ebeid served as prime minister under deposed President Hosni Mubarak from 1999 until 2004.
He resigned under increasing pressure from business leaders demanding faster privatization. Ebeid was known for taking the lead on privatization policies, and several public sector companies were sold during his time in office.
After his resignation, Mubarak appointed him chairman of the Arab International Bank.
In April 2011, then Prime Minister Essam Sharaf removed him from his position on charges of corruption related to the recently ousted Mubarak regime.
In March 2012, Ebeid was sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegally selling land in a state-owned nature reserve located on Luxor's Bayadeya Island, squandering over LE700 million in public funds.
He appealed the verdict, however, and was acquitted in January 2013.
Ebeid was born in the city of Tanta in 1932.
