Inspectors from the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) found multiple violations of environmental law in Alexandria, including emissions violations and improper garbage and sewage disposal, including companies dumping waste directly into nearby waterways.

Among the violators were seven industrial companies, a hospital and restaurants overlooking the sea. A release from the Ministry of Environment did not provide names of the offenders, or clarify what sanctions they will face.

Huda Mustafa, supervisor of the EEAA’s Alexandria branch, said in a statement that “all necessary legal actions” will be taken, and that the agency is working in cooperation with Egypt’s environmental police to “remove irregularities.”

The offenses observed include a sewage station mishandling waste water, a hospital without a license to handle hazardous waste, and multiple companies violating air and water pollution standards enshrined in Law 48 of 1982.
