Avant-titre | Our bread, our dignity: Bread in Egyptian cinema

كتابة: Mada Masr 1 دقيقة قراءة

This episode of Avant-titre is part of Mada Masr's Bread politics, an eight-part series that takes an in-depth look at bread subsidies in Egypt in the context of recent talk of government plans to raise the price of subsidized bread.

Beginning with a scene from the 1992 film Terrorism and Kebab, in which Adel Imam’s character walks home carrying a tray of bread, filmmaker Bassam Mortada traces Egyptian cinema's representation of bread from the 1940s to the present: Bread as an icon of the poor, the boundary of dignity, and a symbol of honor and patriotism. The loaf of bread represents more than a mere type of food, it is tied to major political and economic transformations and periods of political strife.
