52 children killed in Manfalut crash

A collision between a school bus and a train on 17 November left 51 people dead and 17 injured. Most of the victims were school children from the city of Manfalut.

At the door of the intensive care of Assuit University Hospital sit the families of the five children who have just come out of surgery.

The train dragged the bus for 500 meters. Remains of the bus, the cloth, shoes and books of the children could be seen all around the area of the collision and along the tracks fro the 500 meters even after days of the crash.

The mother of three boys who died on the school bus consoles herself by repeating that her children are now in heaven, a much better place. She believes her sons died as martyrs because they were on their way to school. “They now have three beautiful homes in heaven,” she says.

The bus was a 26 seater and had 52 passengers on board. The children age ranged from 3 to 10 years. A number of families lost more than one child.

Hamada, lost three of his children in the school bus accident. All the private satellites wanted to interview him. He had to take time from the funeral to conduct interviews.

Hamada holds a photo of his children, three of them died in the crash.

According to the WHO report, Egypt loses about 12 thousand lives due to road traffic crashes every year. It has a road traffic fatality rate of 42 deaths per 100 000 population.

Funerals were held for each family and the whole town mourn for their loss.

According to the WHO report Egypt is considered one of the worst 10 countries in road safety.
