Young woman injured in explosion near presidential palace
A young woman was injured on Thursday when a homemade bomb exploded under a pedestrian bridge near Qubba Presidential Palace.
According to a security source, Lieutenant Mostafa Samir discovered the bomb earlier this morning and notified the Special Forces. However, the bomb detonated, injuring a civilian. State-owned Ahram Gate states that the bridge is parallel to the palace, adding that security and traffic forces are usually deployed in the area.
The scene of the bombing was cordoned and police dogs are currently searching the area for more explosives while the young woman has been sent to Kobry al-Qubba Hospital for medical care.
According to reports, traffic has been re-routed from the area to avoid congestion.
The upscale district of Heliopolis and its neighboring districts have been sites for explosions in the last year. In May, a homemade explosive device detonated at a traffic checkpoint in Heliopolis, killing one soldier and injuring three others.
In March, one person was injured in an explosion on the Heliopolis tram. Two other bombs were placed by Ettehadiya Presidential Palace at the Marghany tram stop, but were defused by security forces before they exploded.
The suburban residential district of Heliopolis is home to both the Ettehadiya Presidential Palace and the Qubba Presidential Palace.
