1 killed, 4 injured in Cairo explosion targeting CSF vehicle

One police officer was killed and another officer and three enlisted in the Central Security Forces (CSF) were injured on Sunday morning when an explosive device detonated as their vehicle was traveling on a road leading to Maadi, according to a statement by the Interior Ministry.

The ministry’s statement names First Lieutenant Ali Shawky Abdel Khalek as the officer killed in the attack. The three CSF officers have been released from the hospital after being examined, while the injured police officer, Captain Ahmed Ibrahim Abdel Nabi, remains in the hospital, state-news agency MENA cited a security source as saying.

Immediately after the explosion the police closed entrances and exits to the nation’s capital in an effort to apprehend those behind the attack, reported Youm7.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack thus far.

The explosion came the morning after an Egyptian court handed a preliminary death sentence to 30 defendants charged with assassinating former General Prosecutor Hesham Barakat. A final verdict is expected on July 22, pending review by Egypt’s grand mufti.

The militant group Hassm has claimed similar targeted attacks on security patrols and vehicles. In May, Hassm conducted a drive-by shooting in Nasr City that killed two commissioned police officers and one enlisted officer stationed at a checkpoint. In March, the group claimed responsibility for an explosion at a checkpoint in Behteem, on the outskirts of Giza, and, in December 2016, it conducted an attack on a checkpoint in Haram, killing six police personnel.

Hassm claims to only target security forces and denies any responsibility or intention for targeting civilians.
