Update: Explosion in 6 October kills 2

An explosion by unknown assailants at a telephone exchange building under construction on the outskirts of Cairo killed an 18-year-old woman and her mother this morning, according to the state-owned Al-Ahram Gate online news site and Reuters New Agency, citing security and judicial sources.

The explosion happened at around 9am when two bombs that had been stored in the small telephone exchange building went off, Reuters reported.

The building is located in 6th of October City, and has partially collapsed due to the blast. Around 800 people’s telephone lines have been affected.  

The incident follows a series of bombs that exploded this week.

On Wednesday, explosions across the city injured eight people.

Homemade bombs exploded in four metro stations across Cairo and in front of a court complex in Heliopolis, the middle class neighborhood near Cairo's airport. The bombs were reportedly hidden under two cars parked in front of the courthouse.

These explosions occur just a few days before June 30, the day that will commemorate one year since protests escalated into a military decree removing former President Mohamed Morsi from power.

On the eve of January 25 of this year, the third anniversary of the start of the 2011 revolution, a series of explosions took place aiming to destroy the security directorate in Cairo, as well as other smaller targets.
