Update: Eight killed in clashes nationwide

At least eight people were killed Friday, including a four-year-old girl, in clashes nationwide between security forces and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in the aftermath of a string of explosions that rocked the country earlier in the day, the Health Ministry stated.

According to the ministry’s statement, one person died in Damietta, four in Beni Suef, two in Fayoum, and one in Minya, state-owned MENA news agency reported.

The Anti-Coup Alliance, however, places the death toll at 17, maintaining that three people were killed in Fayoum, and three in Minya.

The alliance also said that two people were killed in Beheira, two in Giza, one in Alexandria, and one in Helwan.

59 people were also injured in the clashes that occurred in Damietta, Alexandria, Giza, Beni Suef, Fayoum, Ismailia, Minya, Beheira and Sharqiya, the ministry’s statement said.

Protests by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Damietta were confronted by residents of the area, state-run Al-Ahram reported, forcing them to retreat.

Residents also faced off with protesters in Suez, Giza, and Hurghada.

Tens of protesters have been arrested in Alexandria, Minya, Ismailia, Luxor, Suez, and Damietta.
