Seven ‘Zeitoun Cell’ members sentenced for terrorist activity
Three defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, one was given 15 years and three others were given seven years by the Supreme State Security Court on Sunday in the case known as “The Zeitoun Cell,” state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram reported.
The remaining defendants were released.
The defendants were accused of forming a jihadi terrorist group “Sareyet Al-Walaa wa Al-Baraa” (Regiment of Loyalty and Disavowal) that has allegedly worked against the law and the constitution and carried out attacks on the police, tourists and Copts.
They were also accused of planning attacks on public property, the Suez Canal and ships passing through it.
The 25 defendants committed an armed robbery at a jewelers shop in Cairo's district of Zeitoun in 2007, in which four Copts were killed and two others were injured.
