President forms committee to investigate post-June 30 events

Interim President Adly Mansour issued a presidential decree to form an investigation committee to examine post-June 30 events, the official Egynews website reported on Monday.

The National and Independent Committee will collect evidence and document events since the mass protests on June 30 that led to the ousting of former President Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

The committee will be headed by international legal expert and law professor Fouad Abdel Meniem Riyad, and will include former Egyptian Ambassador to the United States Abdel Raouf al-Ridi, professor of International Law at Ain Shams University Hazem Atlam, law professor at Cairo University Mohamed Badran, and former Deputy Justice Minister for International Cooperation Eskander Ghattas.

The committee, according to the decree, will assess investigations already taking place, as well as examining crimes committed against citizens that were not officially investigated. The decree also stipulated that the vice president of the committee will coordinate with other institutions involved in ongoing investigations in order to compile a final report.

The committee will form a technical committee to assist in its investigations, which will be led by the Assistant to the Prosecutor General Amr Marwan, who will attend the committee’s meetings but will not be permitted to participate in final decision-making.

The decree allows the committee to seek the help of experts and officials within both state-run and non-governmental institutions. It mandates the cooperation of state institutions, especially in the collation of information and evidence.

The committee will be based at the Shura Council headquarters, and will present a final report, along with recommendations, to the president within six months of its formation.
