President appoints advisors team, new intelligence chief
Interim President Adly Mansour appointed a number of officials to the presidential team, the state-run Middle East News Agency reported on Saturday.
Mansour appointed Mohamed Refaat Shehata as security adviser. Shehata was appointed as charge d'affaires of the General Intelligence Services by deposed President Mohamed Morsi, who was ousted on July 3 following a military intervention and a popular move calling for his resignation. Shehata's work in the General Intelligence Services made him known in Palestinian and Israeli circles, especially after he contributed to the negotiations for the prisoners swap that released Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit from the custody of Hamas in Gaza.
Mansour also appointed Ahmad al-Tohamy as the new head of the General Intelligence Services. Tohamy was the head of the Administrative Auditing Authority and was often criticized by Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, from which he hails, of covering up the corruption of figures from the Hosni Mubarak regime. In 2012, Morsi replaced him with Amro Wahby, after allegations that he ignored the investigation into reports incriminating former regime figures such as former spy chief Omar Suleiman.
For the post of presidential advisor for strategic affairs, Mansour appointed Mostafa Hegazy, an academic who specializes in strategic planning and institutional development.
Mansour appointed Ali Awad for the post of presidential advisor for constitutional affairs. Awad is the vice head of the Supreme Constitutional Court.
Finally, Mohamed al-Moslemany, a TV host with privately-owned Dream TV, was appointed media advisor.
Mansour, formerly the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, was appointed interim president on 3 June by the military statement that ousted Morsi. He was given the authority to issue constitutional declarations until a constitution is reinstated, after the current constitution was suspended.
Mansour issued his first constitutional declaration on Friday by dismantling the Islamist-dominated Shura Council, which was the only functioning legislative authority.
