No Ebola cases in Egypt, says Health Ministry
There are no confirmed or possible cases of the Ebola virus in Egypt, the Healthy Ministry announced in a statement today, according to the state-run Ahram Gate news website.
The ministry has formed a committee that is following the outbreak of the virus in West Africa closely, and taking necessary procedures so that Egypt is ready in the event that it does have Ebola virus cases, Ahram reported.
A hospital in the Abbasseya neighborhood of Cairo has been allocated to be a center for receiving any Ebola virus patients. It is also working with the Foreign Ministry to monitor any cases of Egyptian living abroad that may have contracted the disease.
The Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa is spreading faster than efforts to control it, the BBC reported today, citing the World Health Organization’s head Margaret Chan.
Chan told a summit of regional leaders that failure to contain Ebola could be “catastrophic” in terms of lives lost.
Ebola has claimed 728 lives in Guinea, Libera and Sierra Leone, since February. Chan said it could be stopped, if well managed.
Ebola kills 90 percent of those infected. It spreads by contact with infected blood, bodily fluids, or organs, or contaminated environments. Initial flu-like symptoms can lead to external hemorrhaging from the eyes and gums, and internal bleeding that can lead to organ failure.
Fruit bats are considered to be the most natural hosts of the Ebola virus, according to the World Health Organization.
