Newly approved political party formed to ‘purge’ Egypt of terrorists
The Political Parties Office approved the formation of a new party made up of 270 former members of Parliament on Friday, reported the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA).
The We are Egypt Party’s platform is based on “purging Egypt of terrorist elements,” as well as developing economic projects in the Sinai peninsula, according to spokesperson Mahmoud Nefady.
Nefady is the former deputy editor of the state-run daily newspaper Al-Gomhurriya, and the former spokesperson for the Ahmed Shafiq-backed National Movement Party.
Nefady has filed a case against Hossam al-Gheirany, the head of the 2012 Constituent Assembly, and other political allies of former President Mohamed Morsi, accusing them of violating Egyptian sovereignty by meeting with a delegation from the American Jewish Committee.
Defense Minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is likely to run in the upcoming presidential elections and is widely expected to win. Interim President Adly Mansour issued a decree on Sunday saying that the presidential elections should take place within 30 to 90 days after the constitution’s ratification.
Parliamentary elections would then follow. If Sisi does run for president, he will have to rely on newly-formed political forces to legislate in the new parliament.
