Nour Party slams Amr Moussa over electoral coalition

Nour Party slams Amr Moussa over electoral coalition

After Motamar Party President Amr Moussa said in a radio appearance that the Salafi Nour Party could not be part of his electoral coalition due to its Islamist ideology, several Nour Party leading figures fired back, calling Moussa a remnant of the Mubarak regime who caused the deterioration of Egypt regionally and internationally.

Amr Moussa and the Nour Party have been part of the same June 30 coalition for the last year and a half. The Nour Party was also part of the committee of 50 headed by Moussa, which drafted the constitution passed last January.

In statements to state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper, Nour Party President Younis Makhyoun said that the party never sought to join Moussa’s electoral coalition, and questioned his current position enabling him to take such a role.

Makhyoun went on to say that Moussa was a mouthpiece for Mubarak’s regime and represents its policies, whereas the Nour Party is representative of the people and proud of its Islamic ideology.

In a radio interview aired on Friday, Moussa listed the parties that could join his electoral coalition. He excluded the Nour Party, saying the coalition is for civil political powers with similar ideas.

Galal Morra, the Nour Party’s secretary general, said that coalitions built through marginalizing others wouldn’t last, adding that the Nour Party does not discriminate against any factions. However, the Party recently objected to the new parliamentary elections law, which imposes a quota for women and Christians on party lists.
