Morsi not meeting with foreign delegations: Presidency
Former President Mohamed Morsi is not scheduled to receive visits from any foreign delegations to resolve the polarizing tensions between the country’s military leaders and the Muslim Brotherhood opposition, said on Monday Ahmed al-Moslemany, media spokesperson for the interim presidency.
According to the state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA), Moslemany also said that no referendum would be held over the roadmap imposed by the Armed Forces following Morsi’s ouster, and that it would be carried out as planned.
US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, ministers from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar and an EU official had visited senior Brotherhood official Khairat al-Shater in prison, Moslemany confirmed.
Another visit is also planned for Freedom and Justice Party head Saad al-Katatny, who is also currently in prison, the spokesperson continued.
State-owned Al-Ahram newspaper quoted "informed sources" as claiming that the visits to Shater were part of efforts to find a way to disperse the ongoing Brotherhood sit-ins without resorting to force.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the government to avoid utilizing security solutions in dispersing the protests.
