Low-level Brotherhood leader arrested in Suez

Security forces in Suez have arrested a low-level Muslim Brotherhood leader, Hamdi Ayub, in Suez, MENA reported.

A security source told the state-run news agency that Ayub is accused by the Suez Public Prosecutor of participating in and inciting violence in the governorate.

A crackdown on the Brotherhood’s high-level leadership started when Brotherhood-affiliated President Mohamed Morsi was ousted on July 3. The crackdown has recently extended to the lower ranks of the group’s leadership in Egypt’s governorates.

The security source said Ayub was taken to Ataka Suez Police Station.

In a similar operation on October 15 in Qalyubiya, 11 Brotherhood members were arrested on charges of incitement and calling for protests during the Eid al-Adha celebrations.

MENA reported that they were in possession of Molotov cocktails and other weapons. Among those arrested was leading Brotherhood member Anwar Abu Zeid, who served in the now-dissolved Parliament.
