Homemade bomb on railway in Beheira disrupts trains
A homemade bomb exploded Saturday morning on a railway line in the village of Abu Hummos, in Beheira governorate, leaving no casualties.
The explosion made a one-meter deep crater on the track that temporarily affected trains between Cairo and Alexandria.
Another bomb was defused near Qenaweya railway crossing, two kilometers before Abu Hummos, the privately owned Al-Shorouk newspaper reported. No causalities were reported, but police cordoned off the area to prevent civilians and cars from crossing.
Several homemade bombs have been planted in railway stations and on train lines in recent months. In November, two sound bombs were found in Ramses railway station in Cairo, one of which was placed inside a stationary train.
Casualties are usually minimal in such incidents, as homemade bombs or sound bombs are rarely strong enough to incur fatalities directly. However, they often create chaos and stampedes resulting in injury. At least 16 people were injured when a sound bomb went off in a metro car in Hadayeq al-Zeitoun station in northeast Cairo.
A month before this incident, two explosions occurred in Sharqiya governorate, resulting in severe damage to the railway and a shallow crater that halted train movements for several hours.
