Homemade bomb found during rush hour Thursday

A homemade bomb was detonated without injury during the Thursday morning rush hour in northeastern Cairo, the state-owned Egynews reported.

General Mamdooh Abdel Qader, head of the General Directorate for Civil Defense in Cairo, said that information was received about a suspicious device at Eshreen railway crossing in the suburb of Marg.

The bomb was described as a small plastic container packed with half a kilo of nails and wired to a small box filled with explosives and a mobile phone. The bomb squad used a water cannon to safely explode the device.

Last Saturday, a homemade bomb was found on a bus parked at Hegaz Square in Heliopolis. As with the Thursday bomb, authorities said they had received information about a suspicious object before locating the device and disposing of it. The bomb was made of a metal casing and was wired to a detonator and timer.

Over the past few months, a series of bomb attacks has targeted police stations, checkpoints and other facilities around the country.
