The Egyptian Consul in Tripoli was attacked by unknown assailants during a carjacking, leaving him with minor injuries, the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported on Monday.

Sources in the Egyptian consulate said that the consul was attacked while shopping in Al-Andalus street in the Libyan capital. The assailants fled the scene in his vehicle. The consul was then transported to a hospital for medical treatment.

Libyan authorities found the stolen car in a different Tripoli neighborhood.

Last week, the Egyptian deputy ambassador was also attacked in a similar incident, MENA reported. Unknown assailants attempted to steal the deputy ambassador’s vehicle as he was parking in front of a hotel in Tripoli.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement published by the state-owned daily newspaper Al-Ahram asserting that the attacks were criminal incidents and not politically motivated.

The statement added that the consul's medical condition is stable and he has resumed his diplomatic duties.
