Constitution passed by 98%
The constitutional draft passed with 98.1 percent approval the High Elections Commission announced in a press conference Saturday evening.
The turnout in the referendum conducted over two days on 14 and 15 January was 38.6% or 20.1 million, Nabil Salib, head of the HEC stated at the presser.
Salib congratulated the Egyptian people and expressed his gratitude to the members of the commission for their hard work. He also thanked the Armed Forces and the police and said that the importance of the Constitution stems from its principles, its implementation in the real world and its respect for the people's will.
The turnout, Salib said, is unprecedented in Egypt adding that the HEC signed two exchange of expertise agreements with the European Union and the Arab League.
