Clashes erupt between Morsi supporters and police following Eid prayers

Clashes erupted between Morsi supporters protesting against the current government and police forces in Alexandria and in the Abu Zaabal area following Eid prayers, which took place Monday at dawn.

State-owned Al Ahram reported that security forces dispersed hundreds protesting in different areas in Alexandria early on Monday demanding the return of deposed President Mohamed Morsi.

Alexandria Security Directorate Head Amin Ezz al-Din told Ahram that security forces arrested 6 protesters in Alexandria, allegedly in possession of weapons and anti-military flyers. Ezz al-Din also said that two officers and a soldier were injured during the dispersal.

Clashes also erupted in the area of Abu Zaabal in Qalyubiya. The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Interior denied earlier reports of casualties during the dispersal of protests there.

The clashes had erupted after tens of Morsi supporters started protesting following prayers in the area. Four police personnel were also injured during the clashes, the state-owned Middle East News Agency reported.

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy issued a statement on Monday morning asserting that protestors were killed during the day's demonstrations. The statement accused the regime of cancelling Eid prayers in several locations and cracking down on protests, causing more bloodshed.

The alliance is calling for a wave of protests on August 14 to commemorate the first anniversary of the bloody dispersal of pro-Morsi protests, which led to hundreds of deaths.
