Bomb explodes in Cairo, no casualties

A homemade bomb exploded on Tuesday morning near a school in Nasr City, the privately owned Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported Tuesday.

According to Gamal Abdel Aal, head of the Cairo Investigations Department, the bomb frightened local residents, but did not injure anyone. He told Al-Masry Al-Youm that security has placed a cordon around the area as part of its investigations.

A security source told the state-run Middle East News Agency that the bomb exploded in a garden on Khalifa al-Zaher Street.

Initial investigations have revealed that the bomb was a crude, homemade device packed with gunpowder and metal screws, according to the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper.

Ahmed Abdel Ghany, head of the Nasr City Prosecution, was reported to have gone to the scene of the bombing as part of the investigations.

Earlier this month, police reported they had diffused a homemade bomb after it was thrown by an unknown assailant under a police officer’s car in the northern outskirts of Cairo.
