Badie and 7 others sentenced to life, 6 others sentenced to death

Giza Criminal Court sentenced eight Muslim Brotherhood leaders to life on Saturday, including Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie. Six others, including Jama’a al-Islamiya leader Assem Abdel Meguid, were sentenced to death, the state-owned Middle East News Agency reported.

The defendants were found guilty of killing 10 people and injuring 20 others during violent clashes around the Istiqama Mosque in Giza last July.

Badie, as well as Brotherhood leaders Mohamed al-Beltagy, Bassem Ouda, Essam al-Erian, Al-Husseini Antar, Essam Ragab, Mohamed Gomaa and Safwat Hegazy were sentenced to life in prison, while Abdel Maguid, Ezzat Gouda, Anwar Shaltout, Abdel Razeq Mahmoud, Azab Yakout and Mohamed Radwan were sentenced to death.

The men were also charged with inciting violence, using force against state servants, rioting, vandalizing public and private property and belonging to a terrorist organization.

The charges stem from violent clashes that broke out in the aftermath of former President Mohamed Morsi’s ouster. Protesters belonging to the now-banned Brotherhood group fought with area residents around the mosque. As the violence escalated, the defendants allegedly threw Molotov cocktails at the military police building in Giza as part of a “terrorist plot,” according to the prosecution.

This is the second time Badie receives a life sentence. The first ruling took place July when him, along with 36 others, were accused of cutting off the Qalyub Road. Ten others were sentenced to death in the same case, including the Brotherhood’s mufti Abdel Rahman al-Bar.

Minya Criminal Court also sentenced Badie to death along with 183 others on charges of killing a police officer in the southern city following clashes between police forces and pro-Brotherhood protesters.

This year, Egyptian judges have issued well over 1,200 death sentences against Brotherhood members, Morsi supporters and other opposition Islamists. Lawyers representing Brotherhood leaders say their clients were not given fair trials.
