Anan subject of failed attempt on his life, claims campaign

Former Armed Forces Chief of Staff Sami Anan’s presidential campaign issued an official statement on Monday saying he had been subject to a failed attempt on his life.

Anan was allegedly leaving his office when the building’s guard saw the driver of a white taxi speaking on a telephone, saying, “He moved and took a right turn,” the statement said.

Anan and his driver then noticed that they were being followed by two cars, the statement continued.

The statement claimed that there was more evidence regarding the attempt but provided no further details, merely stating that “Anan won't be terrified by such cheap attempts and that all of these attempts will break over the stones of his strong will.”

A complaint would be filed against the perpetrators, and the authorities must be held responsible for ensuring the safety of Anan, his family and his associates, the campaign said.

However, Hany Abdel Latif, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior, told the privately owned satellite channel CBC that there was no evidence of such an attempt.
