17 killed, 3 arrested in North Sinai during military operation
During a raid of several “terrorist hubs” in the North Sinai cities of Sheikh Zuwayed and Rafah on Thursday, the Armed Forces killed 17 people identified as “Islamist extremists” and arrested three others, said a statement published on the military spokesperson’s official Facebook page.
Security forces killed 12 of the “armed elements” in a village south of Rafah, reported the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA), while three more people in a different south Rafah village were shot dead as they allegedly attempted to plant explosive devices targeting police and army personnel.
Security forces also killed two others allegedly in possession of explosives as they rode a motorcycle, MENA reported.
The Armed Forces have been waging an intense operation against armed groups in the peninsula in an attempt to quell a wave of attacks on security forces in the aftermath of former President Mohamed Morsi’s removal from power last July.
