June 20 marks World Refugee Day and coincides this year with day 67 of war in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. By this date, over 2 million individuals have been displaced by the conflict, as estimated by the International Organization for Migration, and over half a million of them have sought refuge in neighboring countries including Egypt.
With limited emergency aid from international organizations and an Egyptian legal framework unwelcoming of refugees, Sudanese and other nationals fleeing the war who have arrived in Egypt have largely been left to rely on family connections, social contacts and grassroots community efforts to meet their immediate needs and navigate their plans for the future.
In this video, we pay field visits to three Sudanese grassroots initiatives in Egypt that are responding to the fallout of the ongoing war in Sudan. Al-Amal Center and School, the Women's Affairs Office Initiative and the October Community Leaders Initiative are working to provide emergency housing, food supplies and medical treatment in the areas around 6th of October City’s Abnaa Othman housing project to help those who have arrived from Sudan transition to stability.
