Well known for lowering blood pressure and popular as a hot or cold drink year-round, hibiscus is especially loved during Ramadan. Its vibrant red color is also useful in the production of other beverages and confections. Yet despite its prevalence, much of its cultivation and distribution remains small-scale, with some spice merchants sourcing directly from farmers. Make yourself a hibiscus drink and join us as we visit a small hibiscus plot and home enterprise in Assiut, then a corner store in Alexandria that sources its supply with a simple phone call to relatives in Aswan.
