Private construction — including low-income housing — has been largely unregulated across Egypt for years. Now that the government is seeking to rectify this by legalizing nearly 3 million building violations, many low-income households are struggling to pay the required fines. In this video, Mada Masr speaks with residents of the Abis villages, Alexandria, about how they built their homes and the financial challenges they face in the building reconciliation process.
