Jasmine harvest nights
Egypt is the world's primary producer of jasmine, with most of its cultivation in Shubra Balula, Monufiya. Jasmine is harvested daily for six months a year, and the oils extracted from it are exported for use in products ranging from perfumes to confectioneries to aromatherapy. Domestically, its fields have become a tourism site, marketed as representing rural beauty and an authentic peasant lifestyle. Yet the laborers who harvest jasmine suffer from low wages tied to daily production and limited to the harvest season, and the exhausting work starts in the dead of night. Mada Masr joined laborers in the jasmine fields one night to record the realities of their work.
