George al-Bahgoury, 82, “the grandfather of Egyptian caricature,” has been producing political cartoons since the 1950s, in addition to paintings, sculpture and writings. He has served as an inspiration to the last two generations of caricaturists, and remains active. He lived many years in Paris in self-imposed exile from Egypt, fearful that he would be detained by the authorities were he to return. “The caricaturist is always with the people — he is never on the side of the establishment,” he said to me.
