Doaa El Adl, 35, was the first woman to become a professional cartoonist in Egypt, and remains the country’s best-known female cartoonist. Adl’s cartoons are uncompromising in their explicit criticism of both the changing Egyptian establishment and its many religious figures. She is a practicing Muslim, but has been accused of blasphemy as a result of her cartoons denouncing female genital mutilation and the appropriation of religious values for political gain.
