The aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines
On November 8, 2013, Tacloban City in the central Philippines was hit hard by Typhoon Haiyan, known locally as Super Typhoon Yolanda. Winds reached speeds of more than 315 km, causing flooding and destruction throughout the province of Leyte. More than 6,000 people lost their lives, a death toll that was still rising five weeks after the storm. Nearly 1,800 are missing, according to the latest update from the Philippines government. No structure in impoverished Tacloban City was spared and rescue teams are still pulling bodies from under the rubble. Nealy 4 million were forced to flee their homes. More than a month later, amid vast devastation, businesses are reopening and residents are attempting to clean debris and rebuild houses.
