Displacement in Gaza: Sheltering by any means possible
West Rafah and Khan Younis are filled with an array of shelters housing the displaced, their makeshift conditions reflecting the bitter reality of being forced into homelessness. Types of shelter include tents, educational campuses, homes overflowing with displaced relatives, and even the destroyed shells of apartment buildings. Near the Tayara Square in west Rafah, for example, one family has returned to what remains of their bombed home. Other displaced people have sought refuge in vans and buses, and a garage located amidst tents in west Rafah has been sheltering displaced people living in vehicles for seven months now.
Schools in Rafah have been serving as shelters for the displaced as well, but, earlier this month, the Israeli military issued evacuation orders for some of the areas in which they are located, forcing thousands to flee north to Khan Younis.
In the southern city of Khan Younis, Al-Aqsa University has been repurposed to shelter thousands of displaced people within its classrooms and lecture halls, becoming a refuge for those whose homes were first destroyed by Israeli forces, and who then lost their tents when ordered to evacuate from east Rafah.
