Update: Two die in student-led protests

Health Ministry sources reported two deaths and 30 injuries during student-led protests called for by the Anti-coup Alliance on Wednesday, including a 14-year-old in Beni Suef and another outside Al-Azhar University in Cairo. 

Six members of the Anti-Coup Alliance, which has called for protests until the end of the month, were arrested in Giza and Beheira Governorates.

The demonstrations, predominantly led by supporters of deposed President Mohamed Morsi, denounced the killing of protesters since July and demanded the release of thousands who have been arrested. University students also demonstrated against a court ruling to return Interior Ministry forces to university campuses.

The health ministry in Beni Suef announced that 14-year-old Amr Kafafy was killed with live ammunition while participating in today’s protests, adding that three others were injured in the events.

Violence also erupted in several other universities amid protests on Wednesday.

The Middle East News Agency reported that security forces fired tear gas on Cairo University students who were protesting in Nahda Square and making their way to the Giza security directorate. Security guards failed to contain the protest inside the campus and students protested in the street, blocking the road.

Security forces prevented Al-Azhar University students from blocking the street after their protests moved off campus, MENA added.

The head of the University hospital in Alexandria told privately owned daily newspaper Al-Shorouk that the hospital received three injured students from the protests, including one with a bullet wound to the back. He added that there were also several cases of fainting due to tear gas.

Protests are ongoing in Zaqaziq and Assiut universities. Eyewitnesses posted images of bird shot injuries from Assiut University on social media.
