Update: Three police officers shot in ongoing attacks

A low ranking policeman from Beni Suef police station was shot dead Monday afternoon, state news portal Egynews reported.

Preliminary investigations have indicated that two unidentified gunmen on a motorbike shot Hassan Sayed as he walked down the street, and fled the scene afterwards.

Another low ranking policeman was shot Monday afternoon while he was driving his private car in uniform on his way home from Al-Saff police station, MENA reported, quoting a security source.

Gomaa Eid, who works in the southern Giza police station, was shot in the jaw by unidentified attackers. Eid was transferred to the police hospital in Agouza.

A third low ranking policeman was shot dead in Hawamdeya, Giza governorate, Monday afternoon, when unidentified attackers on a motorbike open fire towards a police vehicle from Badrashin police station forces, state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram reported.

There was also an attack on Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim in September 2013, when a bomb exploded as his convoy went past.

Scores of Interior Ministry personnel have been murdered in apparent targeted killings in recent months. In January, the Ansar Beit al-Maqdes group claimed responsibility for the murder of General Mohamed Saeed, a high-ranking Interior Ministry official.

Last Friday, a policeman was shot dead while guarding the home of a judge hearing one of the cases against Morsi.

The Tuesday before, February 25, unidentified attackers shot live ammunition at a military colonel in Sharqiya, northern Egypt.
