The prosecution released activist Sanaa Seif on Wednesday after she voluntarily turned herself in, asking her to return in 10 days, she wrote on her Facebook page.
Seif was sentenced to six months in prison for insulting a public official. She didn't attend the court session, but went straight to Sayeda Zeinab Police Station after the verdict was issued, where she was referred to the prosecution.
The prosecution told Seif she had been formally informed of the verdict and should return in 10 days to turn herself in. Seif signed a waiver giving up her right to appeal the verdict.
The prosecution charged Seif with insulting a public official after she refused to cooperate during an investigation last week in relation to charges of instigating illegal protests.
Seif refused to comply with investigators, stating that she believes Egypt’s judiciary has lost its sovereignty and is controlled by executive authorities, she said on Facebook.
She explained that she has suffered from the injustice of the judiciary several times, but will serve her time and not challenge the verdict.
“I simply have no energy left to deal with their procedures,” she said, adding, “This is not a show of bravery … As long as they insist on implicating me, and since either way I’ll pay the price, I’d rather do it while staying true to myself,” the young activist wrote on her Facebook page, apologizing to lawyers for not allowing them to do their jobs properly this time around.
Seif was released among 100 detainees by presidential pardon last September after serving one year and three months in prison for protest-related charges. She is the sister of imprisoned activist Alaa Abd El Fattah.
