Update: One killed and 30 injured in university clashes
Fierce clashes broke out between the Students Against the Coup (SAC) movement and police forces in Cairo and Zagazig universities Wednesday, killing one and causing dozens of injuries and arrests.
Student unrest also erupted on campuses across Egypt.
The Interior Ministry said in an official statement that police forces stormed the campus of Zagazig University at the request of the University's president, after SAC students allegedly damaged the front gate of the administrative building and injured 12 students trying to stop them.
Police also said that eight students, accused of thuggery and rioting, were arrested.
SAC is an umbrella student movement led by students supporting the Muslim Brotherhood and ousted President Mohamed Morsi, as well as other students who oppose the military-backed interim government.
The Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression (AFTE) reported that SAC students marched to the administrative building, smashing its front gate and attempted to attack employees when a group of unknown civilians attacked the march with sticks, knives and birdshot.
SAC students retaliated with fireworks and stones, leading to injuries on both sides, before police forces stormed the campus to end the clashes.
AFTE reported that police randomly arrested the eight students with the help of unidentified civilians. Hazem Ahmed, a Faculty of Arts student, was transferred to the intensive care unit with severe injuries.
SAC's official Facebook page alleged that civilians who attacked the march were thugs trying to stir up violence, giving the police a pretext to then storm the University.
Security forces also clashed with campus protesters at Cairo University, leading to many arrests and injuries.
Police were stationed in front of the university's main gate, as eyewitnesses reported seeing police fire birdshot and live ammunition inside the university, to disperse the protests.
SAC students allegedly captured one civilian who was standing with police forces in front of Cairo University, beating him and causing severe injuries.
ONA news agency initially reported that 17-year-old high school student, Hatem Sayed Ahmed, was killed, but eyewitnesses at the time confirmed to Mada Masr that he was still alive but was suffering from a critical head injury.
Several sources later cited the Health Ministry as saying one fatality and 14 injuries had occurred during clashes in Giza around Cairo University, and 16 were injured in clashes around Zagazig University in Sharqiya.
AFTE also reported that clashes broke out between police and students at Alexandria University, as security fired heavy volleys of tear gas, injuring tens of students with suffocation.
Clashes also erupted in Al-Azhar, Mansoura and Assiut universities.
