Update: Man dies following explosion in Alexandria

A 26-year-old man died from injuries sustained during an explosion in Alexandria on Tuesday, the Reuters-affiliated Aswat Masreya reported.

Alexandria Security Director Amin Ezz al-Din told Aswat Masreya that the explosion was caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The man died in hospital hours after the blast.

According to a Health Ministry official, Ayman Abdel Moneim, two others were injured when the IED went off, including the deceased's father.

Another handmade device exploded in downtown Cairo near Talaat Harb Street early on Tuesday morning.

Security officials told Aswat Masreya that the bomb went off at the entrance to Talaat Harb Square, a popular area close to Tahrir Square.

Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar confirmed to Mada Masr that there were no injuries or casualties following the blast.

Eyewitnesses stated that the blast could be heard throughout downtown. Others commented that it was crudely made and looked more like a large firework explosion, or electrical fire.

Two other homemade bombs were found in different terminals of Cairo International Airport early on Tuesday morning. Both were deactivated before they exploded.

Airport security personnel told the privately owned Al-Arabiya that they detected the bombs using electronic devices.

No arrests were made, but airport security officials stated they would be tightening security and reviewing video footage in an attempt to find those responsible.

Following the fourth anniversary of the January 25 revolution there has been a spate of small IEDs planted throughout the country.

A bomb was discovered and defused on January 26 in the popular City Stars shopping mall in Nasr City. On January 27, an explosive device went off near a police station in Alexandria, killing one and injuring two. Also on January 27, security forces evacuated the Heliopolis Court building after finding two IEDs in the nearby area.

A bomb exploded in the greater Cairo area of Qalyubiya on January 28 near a checkpoint, injuring seven security personnel, but causing no casualties. There was also a bomb defused in Abdel Moneim Riyad Square downtown at a bus stop.

IEDs have become so common that the popular traffic app, “Bey2ollak” started tweeting in Arabic, #Where_is_the_bomb, so residents can avoid traffic jams caused by a recent explosion or the deactivation of an IED.
