Update: Live ammo kills one, critically injures another at Cairo University
The prosecution confirmed that clashes at the Cairo University campus left one dead on Thursday.
Second-year commerce student Omar Osama died after being shot twice in the head with live ammunition, reported the privately owned newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm (AMAY).
Cairo University President Gaber Nassar’s son, Mohamed Nassar, was among the students injured during the clashes, a medical source at the Qasr al-Aini Hospital told Mada Masr.
Another student who suffered from head injuries inflicted by live ammunition is currently in critical condition, the source added.
Gaber Nassar issued a statement on Thursday announcing that police forces would be brought into the campus to keep the peace for the remainder of the exam period, reported the state-owned Middle East News Agency (MENA).
The clashes broke out after Cairo University students reportedly broke into the faculty of law building earlier in the day, damaging the main gate and destroying the dean's office, while employees fled the building.
Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated students allegedly clashed with fellow students who were angered by the Brotherhood students’ purported attempts to disrupt exams, according to AMAY.
Protesters gathered in front of the faculty of science and marched around the campus, and chanting against the army and Colonel General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Eyewitnesses reported that Muslim Brotherhood students shot pellets at security forces, adding that university staff were trapped inside the building unable to leave due to the clashes, according to the state-owned news site Egynews.
Later, the students blocked the route to Nahda Square — where a pro-Brotherhood protest was violently dispersed in August 2013 — and declared their intention to head to the Giza Security Directorate to protest the killing of their colleague Abdel Rahman Youssry in clashes that took place on Sunday. Students held posters of their deceased colleague.
Police dispersed the protesters with tear gas, and they retreated to Tharwat Street, where they set tires and trees on fire and blocked the road, AMAY reported.
Meanwhile, Ain Shams student demonstrators attempted to break into the faculty of commerce, but protests were contained by security forces, privately owned Al-Shorouk newspaper reported.
