Update: Clashes reignite on Haram Street
Security forces and residents of different areas halted attempted protests organized by Muslim Brotherhood supporters on Friday.
Earlier in the day, the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper reported that residents of Haram Street dispersed a protest of Muslim Brotherhood supporters, raising pictures of Armed Forces chief Colonel General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and chanting against the Muslim Brotherhood.
Clashes renewed on the same street early Friday evening, prompting security forces to fire another round of tear gas to disperse the crowd.
A protest in Mohandiseen was dispersed by tear gas after security forces clashed with the demonstrators, the state-run Middle East News Agency reported.
Tear gas was also used to disperse a protest in Maadi, said Al-Ahram.
The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy had called for mass protests under the slogan “Hail the martyr’s mother” on Friday afternoon. The demonstrations were against what the group calls the military coup that ousted former President Mohamed Morsi on July 3.
Protesters also clashed with residents in Alexandria and Mahalla.
Security forces arrested 12 protesters in Monufiya for marching in support of Morsi and holding up signs commemorating the deadly dispersal of the Rabea al-Adaweya sit-in. Ten others were also arrested in Minya for staging protests without notifying the authorities, as per the new Protest Law.
