Update: Ajnad Misr claims responsibility for Heliopolis Court bombing

Militant group Ajnad Misr has claimed responsibility via their Twitter account for a bombing outside the Heliopolis Court on Monday morning, which injured two policemen and one civilian in the eastside Cairo district of Heliopolis.

According to the Interior Ministry, Colonel Hisham al-Azab, conscript Mostafa Abbas, and Sherif Fekry were injured in the attacks. They were transferred to nearby hospitals and, according to Health Ministry Spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, two of them are in critical condition.

The explosion is the latest in a string of attacks on judiciary hotspots this year, and the second time the same courthouse has been targeted. The first attack was on March 2, and damaged the facade of the building but left no casualties.

On August 2, a senior judge in the Delta governorate of Sharqiya was targeted by a car bomb outside his home in Diarb Negm City. Nobody was harmed in the blast.

In the most serious incident to date, General Prosecutor Hesham Barakat was assassinated in a car bomb explosion after leaving his house in Heliopolis on June 29. An official mourning period was declared after his death, with President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi announcing plans to rename the Rabea al-Adaweya Square after the deceased prosecutor. The square saw the violent dispersal of a Muslim Brotherhood encampment protesting the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi from power in the summer of 2013, a dispersal Barakat had ordered.

On May 16, three judges were gunned down in Arish, North Sinai, hours after a preliminary death sentence for Morsi was announced on charges of plotting jail breaks. The attack was claimed by the Province of Sinai, who released a video of the assassination shortly after. A few weeks before, a bomb was also detonated outside the High Court in downtown Cairo on March 2, killing two and injuring nine.
